Here are a few helpful items to know in order to prepare for an approaching hurricane.
Know Hurricane Terms
Hurricane Watch – A hurricane is possible within thirty-six hours. Stay tuned for additional information.
Hurricane Warning – A hurricane is expected within twenty-four hours. You may be advised to evacuate. If so, evacuate immediately.
Ask your local emergency preparedness office about evacuation plans. Learn evacuation routes.
Plan a place to meet your family in case you are separated from one another in the hurricane.
Assemble a disaster supplies kit.
Board up windows. Permanent storm shutters offer the best protection. Also, you can use 5/8†marine plywood. Tape does not prevent windows from breaking.
Know how to shut off utilities.
Make a record of your personal property.
Consider flood insurance and purchase it well in advance.
Disaster Supplies Kit
Water
Plan on one gallon of water per person per day, for drinking, washing, cooking, and sanitation.
Store as much as possible in plastic containers such as soft drink bottles.
Avoid using breakable containers, such as glass bottles or mason jars.
Food
Store at least a three day supply of non-perishable food.
Choose foods that do not require refrigeration or cooking.
Choose foods that are healthy and high nutrition type.
Supplies and Equipment
Be sure to include these items:
Flashlight
Extra batteries
Bottled water (At least three gallons of water per person)
Battery-powered radio
Battery-powered lantern
First aid kit and essential medications-prescription medications and list of medications for each person

Canned food and non-electric can opener
Special items for infants, elderly or disabled family members
Ready to eat canned meats, fruits and vegetables
High energy foods – peanut butter, jelly, crackers, etc
Vitamins
Utility knife, shut off wrench, and pliers
Tape
Compass
Paper and pencils
Extra pair of glasses and sunglasses
Plastic sheeting
Soap
Personal items
Plastic garbage bag and ties
Pet food
Protective clothing, rainwear
Clothing and bedding: a change of clothes, footwear and a sleeping bag or bedroll and pillow for each household member
Car keys and keys to the place you may be going (friend’s or relative’s home)
Written instructions on how to turn off electricity, gas and water if authorities advise you to do so (Remember, you’ll need a professional to turn them back on.)
Important papers to take with you in a portable, waterproof container:
Driver’s license or personal identification
Social Security card
Proof of residence (deed or lease)
Insurance policies
Birth and marriage certificates
Stocks, bonds and other negotiable certificates
Wills, deeds, and copies of recent tax returns
